Marlene Payva Almonte, Senior Researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland at Rovaniemi, Finland, has visited MIARC thanks to a scholarship from the prestigious Maupertuis programme of the French Institute in Finland. The visit took place May 11-15, 2026.
Its objectives were the following:
(1) conduct research which critically assesses Arctic (environmental) governance, with a focus on climate change interventions;
(2) discuss research in the collaborating institution;
(3) explore possibilities of further collaboration, e.g. inter-institutional research mobility.
Marlene Payva Almonte is Senior Researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland at Rovaniemi, Finland. Her current research is dedicated to issues in Arctic governance and climate interventions as well as critical approaches to international law and international relations in the Arctic, with a focus on environmental, human rights and climate change issues. She teaches Human Rights and Security in the Arctic, Introduction to Arctic Studies, and Arctic Governance as well as (Environmental) Law in the Arctic Studies Programme at the University of Lapland. She holds a PhD in Law from the University of Liverpool and has published in various peer-reviewed journeys.
