Professor Jean Malaurie’s exceptionally long and distinguished career as an internationally renowned anthropo-geographer and one of the foremost Arctic specialists was honoured by French Minister of Higher Education and Research Sylvie Retailleau during Jean Malaurie’s funeral ceremony held February 13, 2024, at the Cathedral of Saint-Louis-des-Invalides, in Paris.
The ceremony was followed by military honours in the courtyard, in the presence of Professor Malaurie’s family, SAS Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Ambassadors of Denmark and Monaco in France, the French Ambassador for the Poles and Maritime Issues and numerous other personalities. During her eulogy, the Minister observed that “we have lost a giant, a giant who has taught us so much and I wish to say thank you”. Professor Malaurie’s son Guillaume paid homage to his father’s spirit of resistance and resolute will never to bend down to arguments of authority or to follow the beaten track. In his homily, Reverend Geoffroy de la Tousche spoke an intensity in Professor Malaurie’s life and work that is “compelling to us” – an inspired remark and challenge for the work of our institute in the years to come.
