Erki Tammiksaar is senior research fellow in history of science at the Estonian University of Life Sciences and associate professor of history of geography at the University of Tartu in Estonia. He is member of the Baltic Historical Commission and German Polar Research Society. His research has initially focused on history of polar research in the world, and especially in the Russian Empire in the 19th century.
Additional his interest field is the development of science in the Russian Empire and Estonia since 19th century. His PhD thesis (2000) was defenced at the Tartu University on the topic „Karl Ernst von Baer and polar Research in the Russian Empire 1830–1840s years“. He is author of numerous articles dedicated to the history of Arctic and Antarctic research and he as leaded some working groups in this field. He has organised exhibitions about Russian polar researchers like Baer, Alexander Theodor von Middendorff, Adam Johann von Krusenstern and Eduard von Toll in Estonia, Russia and Germany. He has worked together with film directors like Riho Västrik, Volker Koepp, and Peter Prestel as advisor on the history of polar Research in the Russian Empire.
